What is a lithophane?

A lithophane is an artistic technique in which an image is created by varying the thickness of plastic. The effect becomes visible only when illuminated from behind—thicker areas appear darker, while thinner areas appear lighter, forming a three-dimensional image in shades of gray or sepia (depending on the shade of white plastic used).
